Beverley Pancake Race: a recipe for success

On Sunday, February 15th, the historic streets of Toll Gavel transformed into a racing track for Beverley’s traditional Pancake Race. This annual event, held on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, celebrates a quirky British tradition dating back to the legend of a woman rushing to church with her frying pan in hand.

Beyond the fun, the races serve as a vital boost to the local economy and a way to keep Beverley’s unique community heritage alive for the younger generation.

The Competition

The event featured local businesses, charities, and community groups competing in five heats to clock the fastest times. The two quickest teams then faced off in a final “Toss Out” to crown the champion.

The Matchups:

  • Race 1: Beverley Breezers vs. Butter Me Up
  • Race 2: White Ribbon vs. Beverley FM
  • Race 3: Flippin’ Fabulous vs. Pat’s Pancake Groupies
  • Race 4: The Wombles vs. The Ripe and Reckless
  • Race 5: The Two Annes vs. The Chamberites

The day also featured a special guest appearance: Archer K9 Elite, who organised a crowd-pleasing dog race.

The Results

While BCoT put in a solid performance with a mid-table finish of 1:25, the real battle for the podium happened between the standouts of Race 3.

  • Grand Champions | Pat’s Pancake Groupies | 1:00
  • Runners-Up | Flippin’ Fabulous | 1:08
  • Best Dressed Team | The Ripe and Reckless | N/A

The event brought everyone together to enjoy the fun and games while looking forward to Shrove Tuesday.
