Cabinet issue update on Beverley Park & Ride scheme

In a meeting held Tuesday, 19 March 2024, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet members decided that it did not support the proposed park and ride scheme for Beverley and considered that it did not represent good value for money.

Originally, the park and ride was proposed with the aim of reducing traffic volumes in Beverley town centre and improving journey times and reliability for drivers.

Councillor Leo Hammond, cabinet member for planning, communities, and public protection, said: “Due to changing circumstances in the need for a park and ride service, following the pandemic, and since this scheme was first developed nearly 20 years ago, transport and journey patterns in Beverley town centre have changed significantly.

“This is due to the creation of new private long-stay car parks, and we continue to ensure taxpayers money is spent wisely and on projects where there is a clear need and benefit.”

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport, added: “Independent assessments into the park and ride scheme showed this would provide ‘poor value for money’, requiring a significant annual subsidy of potentially several hundred thousand pounds.”

Discussions will be held by the appropriate committees in due course regarding the future of the proposed site for the park & ride.

To cater for large events in Beverley, such as the Festival of Christmas and major cycle events, the council already operates a temporary park & ride from Beverley Westwood. This is free to the public and will continue as supply and demand sees fit.
